Park Street runs from the Centre up to Clifton; half way up Park Street is Brandon Hill, with the Cabot Tower. This tower was built in 1897, to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of John Cabot's voyage to the North American mainland (Newfoundland) in 1497:

Walking up to the top of Park Street and along Queens Road brings us to Victoria Square in the heart of Clifton:

The path through Victoria Square leads into the main shopping and eating areas of Clifton - Princess Victoria Street and Clifton Down Road, with its rather beautiful church, Christ Church:

turning left at Christ Church brings us to Isambard Kingdom Brunel's famous Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The views from the bridge are spectacular - with the observatory and the gorge on one side, and the Avon Gorge hotel and views to the south of Bristol on the other. The observatory is a small, squat tower with a "camera obscura" in it - a Victorian contraption of lenses that projects an image of the surrounding land onto a white bowl inside the tower.

Crossing the suspension bridge and continuing to the main road brings us to Ashton Court, a mansion house just outside Bristol and open to the public. The grounds of Ashton Court have a public golf course, woodlands, many walks and the mansion house itself. It also hosts numerous events, such as the International Balloon Fiesta.
