Taoism

Taoism is a philosophy, not a religion, which maintains that the Universe is filled with a life-force called "Chi", which is within all living things, and maintains and nourishes us. According to Taoism, Chi flows through the body along channels called meridians (these meridians are used by acupuncturists to cure disease), and illness arises from Chi becoming blocked. Central to Taoism are various forms of meditation and exercise, including T'ai Chi, which aim to restore balance so that Chi can flow freely, enhancing health and vitality.

The central tenets of Taoism (which is pronounced Dow-ism, by the way), are set out in a mediaeval book called the Tao Te Ching. The basic principles are gentleness, and "yielding". This does not mean giving in all the time, but yielding to the natural ebb and flow of the Universe - achieving more by doing less.
